TUI and MEGA MITRE 10 Garden Competition Finalist 2011

THis year we decided to enter into the TUI and Mega Mitre 10 School Garden Challenge because we would be doing the gardening anyway so why not share our gardens with others. When we entered we received a voucher to redeem at Mega Mitre 10 for some lovely garden products. We sent in regular updates to TUI to show them what we were doing in the garden and how our garden was growing. We received news early November that we had been chosen as a 'FINALIST' and that our garden would be judged in November. On November 17th, Lianne, from TUI Products came to kindergarten to judge our garden and present us with a 'Finalist Certificate. Carlos received the certificate because he is one of the main helpers in the garden. Lianne also gave us another voucher for garden tools, 4 Gardening Books, and a 6 month subscription for KIDS magazine. WOW!!! How lucky we are at Bayview Kindergarten.

Black Out Day - RWC Ceremony

September 9th 2011 - TOday we held a 'BLACK OUT DAY' at Bayview to celebrate the opening of the Rugby World Cup in Auckland. Most of the children wore black. We held a ceremony where we sang the National Anthem then we divided into two teams - White and Black. We played pass the rugby ball over and under and then had a tug-a-war. It was so much fun. The children really got into the spirit of the game.

Grandparents Day 2011

August 31st 2011 - Today we held our annual Grandparents Day for the morning and the afternoon sessions. We had lots of grandparents, and some great grandparents, come along to both sessions. In the morning we sang six songs for our grandies, starting with our Bayview Greeting Song which was lead by Coralee and Jacob. Then we sang I Wish I Was, The Playdough Song, Mrs Bunny, Kindy Rock Twist (we invited everyone to join in), and we finished off with The National Anthem. What a fabulous day it was. Everyone had so much fun - young and old. We love Grandparents Day at Bayview. xxx

TUI and MEGA MITRE 10 Garden Competition

We have entered the TUI and MEGE MITRE 10 School Challenge Garden Competition 2011. We received a voucher from Tui and Mega Mitre 10 for heaps of 'free stuff' which kindergartens are always wanting due a permanent lack of funds. We got a spade, 3 trowells, a hose, hose fittings, a sprinkler, bags of garden mix and seed raising mix, seed raising trays. We are very grateful for all this garden stuff. We also got a huge box of lovely vegetable seedlings from Zealandia Horticulture free. WOW, we are very lucky. The children have been planting out lettuce and mustard plants so far but we have beans, spring onions, beetroot, and lots of silverbeet still to plant. The weather is great so it should happen next week. :)

Installing our Rainwater Storage Tank

Last Friday (12th August) Glenn the Plumber came to kindergarten to install our rainwater tank. He plumbed a pipe from the spouting to the tank, put an overflow pipe to the storm water drain just in case we don't use the water quick enough, put in two taps - one higher up so the children can get a bucket underneath and one lower at the bottom of the tank that we also want to install a hand pump and half barrel up to in time. We will use the rainwater to fill our water trough for children's play and for watering our garden. What a great way to recycle rainwater. We can't wait for the tank to fill so we can start using the rainwater. Thank you Glenn.

Matariki Celebration June 3rd 2011

We decided to make the Rewena Paraoa Bread (Potato Bread) again this year to have as a part of our 'feast' at our Matariki Celebration. It has taken us 4 days to make the bread and many children have taken part in the process over the 4 days; be it peeling and chopping potatos, or measuring ingrediants to make the dough on Day 4. The bread was yummy!!!

Welcome to our Chickens

March saw us introduce Lucky and Nugget to their new home. The chickens are Brown Shavers. They live out the back at kindergarten and have a coup called the Bayview Hilton Chicken Coup. They eat special chicken food and love our scraps. We are getting an egg a day. We will be cooking with these lovely free range eggs. These chooks were rescued from a Battery Hen house. They are so happy to be with us. We would like to thank Sophie and her family for lending them to us.

The Pumpkin Competition

The Pumpkin Competition

The competition was held between Bayview Primary School and Our Kindergarten. The seeds were planted same day. After returning from the summer break we discovered the competition was all on. Mr Pearces' pumpkin had grown really big and ours was so much smaller. As time went on it became clear that school won the competition. Can you guess the weight of the School's pumpkin? It weighed in at 35 kilos. Congratulations Mr Perace. We will do this again next growing season.

Red and Black Day

Friday 4th March we held a Red and Black Day for The Canterbury Earthquake Appeal. We raised $77.00. Thank you to everyone making this a special day.

Bayview Trikathon 9th March 2011

Today we had a Trikathon to raise money for a Water Storage Tank for the recycling of rain water. What fabulous support we had, and a great time was had by all.

New Sand for our Sandpit.

March 11th: Today we got a truckload of lovely new sand to top up our sandpit. It was all hands on deck to shift the sand into the sandpit. Fran (Blake's mummy) brought her shovel. Jacob's daddy and baby brother helped. Joelene, our other Blake's mummy helped too. ALl the children helped with buckets, spades, rakes, and wheelbarrows. Many hands make light work. Thank you so much everyone for all your help.We love you all. :)
