Today, December 3rd, the children performed at Bayview School's assembly. We sang the Bayview Kindergarten Greeting Song (led by by Brody), Pohutukawa Tree, He Has a Red Coat, and When Santa Got Stuck Up the Chimney. The children sang beautifully, and the school children and teachers gave them a well-deserved cheer and applause.

Mr Bean Seed November 5th

November 5th: Mr Bean Seed in the vase is growing in the vase pressed against wet serviettes. No soil.....only wet paper. Two seeds are growing; unfortunately one of the plants got broken. See them in the photo.

Mr Bean

Mr Bean Seed growing in a vase:

October 19th: We are watching to see if a Scarlet Runner climbing bean seed can grow in a glass vase pressed between the glass and some wet serviettes. We need to keep the serviettes wet. The bean seed has no soil. Will it grow?????

November 4th: Mr Bean seed in the vase is growing very nicely. All three are growing (unfortunately i broke the stalk of one but the other two are doing fine - one better and taller than the other). Interesting isn't it that a seed will grow with water alone......no soil.
Today some children drew a still-life drawing of Mr Bean Seed. Hannah drew the picture above. Hannah said, "This is Mr Bean. He is growing so tall. And he will grow so big".
Neve also drew Mr Bean Seed. Neve said, "This is Mr Bean. Mr Bean is growing in a jar. He has got roots for pushing up out of the water. He has leaves. He pushes up into the sun to grow. The seed opens up". Pretty amazing words, thinking, and observations from Neve.
We will continue to watch Mr Bean Seed and measure his growth.

Learning about the KAKAPO

The children have been learning about KAKAPO as part of the Kakapo Recovery Programme, the theme of this year's Kindergarten Awareness Month. Last October 26th, we had a great opportunity to skpye with a ranger from the Department of Conservation in the far away Codfish Island to ask questions and learn more about the endangered native bird called kakapo. It was an exciting experience for the children and even the adults at Bayview Kindergarten!

Setting up our compost bin.

We set up the compost bin with a keen group of children today. We need to start making our own compost now because it is a way of recycling the children's kai time waste and other garden waste. We have had some beautiful new raised vegetable garden boxes built this term so we are going to need some compost to make our vegetables grow well. The children really enjoy this type of gardening activity. It is teaching them lifelong skills at the same time.

Waste Recycling System Set Up

We have set up a system for the children to recycle their kai time waste. Their is ice cream containers for the various waste, be it for the compost bin, bread waste for the bird feeder, or rubbish bin waste. The system is working well.

Lunchbox Talk

We held a 'lunchbox inspection' today during the session to check the children's lunchbox's for 'healthy food'. Bayview Kindergarten is a 'Healthy Heart' kindergarten and this year we are going for GOLD!!!!. We were extremely impressed with the food in the children's lunchbox's. Thank you to the mum's and dad's for keeping to our healthy food policy. Treats are OK at home and special occasions. :)

Buns and Milo

One of the Morning mum's brought buns in for the children to spread and enjoy for their morning tea. We picked lettuce from the garden which Maia washed then we set up the table ready for the children to prepare their bun with margarine, jam, marmite, lettuce. Kathy made delicious warm milo for the children to drink with their healthy bun. YUM!!!!!!!

Muffin Making at Kindergarten

Earlier in the week Emma asked Kathy and me "if we could make muffins like we did last time?". How could we say no??. We decided that Friday would be a good day because we have a longer session which would give us plenty of time for baking. On Thursday we picked rhubarb from the kindergarten vegetable garden which Emma and friends, Natalie and Maia, washed, chopped, and cooked, ready to add to a muffin if desired. We also picked and chopped up spinach from our garden to add.........

Whale Rider - the book.

This week we have read the story about 'Whale Rider' to the Morning Children; a Chapter a day. This is a complicated story for 4 yr olds to understand, with some big, difficult, words. We have been amazed by how much understanding our children have of some of these words, and how able they are to articulate their understanding..............

Easter Hat Parade at Bayview School Hall

On the last day of Term we were invited to attend the Easter Hat Parade at Bayview Primary. Lesley was asked to be the judge for the Primary children. It was a very difficult job for her. She chose: the tallest, the smallest, the most Easter'y hat, and the hat mostly made by a child. We enjoyed being part of the school hat parade. :)
